Phase 4 - February 2022
Written by Tina Sibley in March 2022
Suddenly - it's February - the month of my hike on Kilimanjaro!
And - miraculously, I was beginning to feel I might be just about ready.
Final Plans and Training
The first major decision I came to was to abandon my plans to attend the Made in Cadiz Bachata Congress in Cadiz the weekend before I was due to leave for Kilimanjaro.
Anyone who knows me knows how much I LOVE this event and I even chose my Kili dates purposely after this event so I could do both.
However - travel requirements meant that I needed a negative PCR test before flying to Kilimanjaro. A positve test would end my journey and all the hard work I had put in.
For that reason, I reluctantly gave in my ticket, and cancelled all dancing plans from the 1st of February - practically isolating myself for the last 2 weeks before my trip. I could not have lived with myself if I was stopped because of picking something up last moment.
Instead, I focused on my fitness and became obsessed with watching videos on YouTube about Kilimanjaro and, in particular, on the Lemosho Route.
Mulhacen
The weekend of the 9th and 10th February, I booked a trip to hike a winter ascent of Mulhacen with a guide.
The reason behind this was to push myself even further and to put myself at the highest altitude as possible to begin the acclimatisation process. Mulhacen is 3,600 m so it would be a good start. It would also give me some experience of hiking in the cold and snow.
It was an incredible weekend and I believe was very helpful. My guide, Jose Luis was brilliant and, although this wasn't an easy weekend, I achieved what I set out to do, reaching the summit, being fine with the altitude and giving my confidence a massive boost.
I felt ready.
After Mulhacen, it was time to rest, recharge and pack!
I will post a separate link to a blog especially about Mulhacen soon.
