Day 2: Tuesday 18th June - Cusco - Pisac - Ollantaytambo

After breakfast we will be collected by our guide at 08am and we will leave Cusco for the Sacred Valley. Don't worry, we will be coming back to Cusco to spend more time exploring the city after the Inca Trail Trek.

You will be taken on a road that winds around the mountains north of Cusco. On the way, we will stop at a famous point known as El Mirador (Lookout Point). From there, we will be able to see the Sacred Valley and gain some insight into Inca history. The Sacred Valley was one of the main areas the Incas settled. There is an unusual abundance of fertile plains in this high area of the Andes. You will also witness vast contour terracing and irrigation channels left behind by the Incas. Later on, we will drive towards the ruins of Pisac.

Pisac is a village in southern Peru’s Sacred Valley region. It's known for its lively handicrafts market in the main square. A path winds from the square past agricultural terraces up to Pisac Archaeological Park, a hilltop Incan citadel with ancient temples, plazas and the Intihuatana, a stone structure thought to have been a sundial. Views from the top stretch across the Quitamayo gorge and surrounding valley.

Here, you will witness and learn about Inca culture. You will see amazing works of stone art and impressive agricultural terraces. After exploring, we will drive back to the lower town of Pisac to stop at a bustling handicraft market. After you spend some time walking around the market bargain hunting, we will meet for lunch at a local Andean restaurant.

After lunch, will drive along the Urubamba River towards the town of Ollantaytambo. Once we reach Ollantaytambo, we will visit the ruins, an important area of Incan construction, built during the Inca’s heydays. This is an extraordinary Inca site because you can find rock formations representing the Inca god, Wiracocha. We will spend the next two nights at Ollantaytambo where we begin to prepare for our Inca Trail journey.

Meals included: Breakfast at the hotel

Day 3: Wednesday 19th June - Ollantaytambo

Today is an easy, relaxed day to conserve our energy. After ensuring that you have everything you need for the trek, there will be a coaching workshop for about 90 minutes, where we will get into the right frame of mind for our adventure.

There will be the opportunity to explore the town, buy souvenirs (and some coca sweets) and get prepared.

Meals included: Breakfast at the hotel

Day 4: Thursday 20th June - Inca Trail Day 1: Ollantaytambo - KM42 - Ayapata

Trekking distance: 14km Camp Site Elevation: : 3,300 meters

In the morning, we have an early start, being picked up at around 06.30 by our guide.

We will be taken to the Porter House which is located in Ollantaytambo and, after a delicious breakfast prepared by your cook, your guide will introduce you to your team of porters. We will then drive to Km 82, and go through the first Inca Trail checkpoint to begin our trek.

The first 2 hours of the trek are relatively easy as we make our way to our first Inca site. Patallacta is an ancient Inca checkpoint for the approach to Machu Picchu. From Patallacta it’s another 2-hour hike to our lunch stop. We will learn about the Inca Culture and way of life.

After lunch, we will hike for another 2½ hours until we reach the first night’s campsite at Ayapata (3300 meters). On this last stretch, we pass through 2 small communities. If you want to buy any energy drink, snacks, or essential items you may have forgotten such as batteries you can do so here.

We’ll arrive at our campsite by 5:00 PM. After settling in for a bit, you can relax and have a hot drink and snack with your team of porters, chefs, and guides. By 7:30 PM, your dinner will be ready, and after you can get some well-deserved rest.

Meals included: All meals included

Day 5: Friday 21st June - Inca Trail Day 2:

Ayapata – Dead Women’s Pass – Pacaymayo – Chaquicocha

Trekking distance: 16km Camp Site Elevation: : 3,600 meters

This is the toughest and longest day of the trek, but massively rewarding! You will be woken up with a hot cup of coca tea at 4:45 a.m, followed by a nutritious breakfast.

At 6:15 a.m., we will begin hiking towards the highest point of the Inca Trail, Dead Women’s Pass (4,215 meters).

It will be a four-hour climb, through different microclimates, with amazing views of the mountains. It is difficult trekking at this elevation, so there will be a lot of breaks along the way. Once you reach the summit, your porters will be waiting with a hot glass of tea, and you will have some time to enjoy it as we’ll stop for a short break to enjoy the views before setting off again to descend to the next valley (Pacaymayu Valley – Hidden River).

You will then hike for another hour and a half downhill through Inca steps until you arrive at your lunch spot. After lunch, we head for my favourite part of the hike at Runkuraquay pass. We begin ascending again to the second pass of the trek. It’s 2 hours over the pass where we will stop at a small Inca site (Runcu Raccay) and see two huge waterfalls cascading down the opposite side of the valley.

After the second pass, it’s another hour downhill hike to reach the magnificent Inca site, Sayacmarca (an otherwise inaccessible village). We’ll stop here to rest and have a quick tour.

Afterward, we will be able to watch the sunset over the Vilcabamba mountain range. It’s then just another 20 minutes until we stop for the night at our second campsite Chaquicocha (Dry Lake, 3600 meters).

After dinner, if you’re not too exhausted, we can do some star gazing, and we’ll point out the fascinating Inca constellations. In the magnificent Southern Hemisphere sky, away from all the artificial lighting, this sky is something to behold!

Meals included: All meals included

Day 6: Saturday 22nd June - Inca Trail Day 3:
Chaquiccoha – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna

Trekking distance: 10km Camp Site Elevation: : 2,600 meters

On the three hour continuation to our campsite, we will visit two Inca sites, Phuyupatamarca (Village above Clouds) and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun).

As we walk, we will have the opportunity to see Salkantay, the second highest snow-capped mountain in the Sacred Valley, and a fantastic panoramic view of the Vilcabamba mountain range.

Along the way, you will discover different types of plants, flowers, and birds in the forest. After lunch, you may take the five-minute walk to the most beautiful Inca site of the trail, Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young). This place is full of impressive buildings and terraces. Around 5:30 p.m., you will go back to the campsite for your last happy hour and dinner.

Then a small ceremony, to say thank you, and goodbye to your amazing “green machine” porters. If you choose, you may leave a gift to say thank you.

Meals included: All meals included

Day 7: Sunday 23rd June - Inca Trail Day 4:
Wiñay Wayna – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Return to Cusco

Trekking distance: 5km Machu Picchu Elevation: : 2,400 meters

Once finished, you will walk to the checkpoint of Machu Picchu, where you can use the facilities to freshen up and store your backpack. Your guide will lead you around the Machu Picchu complex for two hours, teaching you about this marvelous place.

Following the end of the tour, you will have time to explore on your own. Around 1:30 p.m. you will depart from Machu Picchu, and take the bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch. Your train out of Aguas Calientes will be at 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m., depending on availability. After breakfast, we’ll hike about 2 hours uphill to the Rainbow Mountain range. At a slower pace, it could be 2¾ hours, or if you are really fit quick and acclimatized well, some people can do in 1½ hours. The hike up includes some short breaks where the guide will explain some important information about the mountains and the geography of the area. Perhaps you’ll have a chance to catch sight of some of the locals, including llamas and alpacas that frequent this area. You will get around an hour to enjoy the views and take your photos.

The trek back down the valley is the icing on the cake, and many of our hikers say that it is even nicer than Rainbow Mountain!
